How Often Should I Check In With My Mental Health Professional?

Question: How often should I check in with my mental health professional?

Bruce Cohen, M.D., Ph.D., McLean Hospital

Answer: Usually early in treatment -- when one has a lot of symptoms -- appointments with a mental health professional are roughly weekly. Later as treatment is stabilized and one begins to feel better, appointments become less frequent and can go to once a month, even once a year. If you stop treatment but symptoms recur you should contact your health care professional as quickly as possible.
