Answer: A variety of people are able to make a diagnosis of depression in children. The full range of mental health professionals can do so. Psychologists, school psychologists, clinical psychologists, counseling psychologists -- in addition, psychiatrists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, even adult psychiatrists, social workers, psychiatric nurses -- are all capable of diagnosing depression in children. In addition, many physicians who receive special training are effective at diagnosing depression in children -- that often includes pediatricians or family practitioners.
