— -- Question: What medications are helpful in preventing heart failure after some damage has been done to my heart?

Answer: After damage has been done to the heart such as a heart attack, the best medications to prevent further progression to heart failure are drugs called ACE inhibitors and beta blockers. These two classes of medications have been shown to result in a reversal of some of the damage to the heart and to slow the progression to heart failure.
