If I'm Caring For Someone With Swine Flu, What Can I Do To Make Sure I Don't Get Sick?

Question: If I'm caring for someone with swine flu, what can I do to make sure I don't get sick?

Peter Katona, M.D., University of California at Los Angeles

Answer: If you're caring for somebody with swine flu, you want to be somewhat careful. If they're symptomatic and they're coughing or sneezing, you want to keep your distance from them. It would be nice if they wore a mask during that time. You want to be careful about touching them, kissing them, hugging them. You want to wash your hands and let them wash their hands as much as possible to keep their transmission low. So you want to keep your distance both for respiratory spread as well as for skin-to-skin contact spread.
