An organization of Zeitels' patients is working to raise money toward his research. The non-profit group Voice Health Institute has already raised $10 million, and includes high-profile patients such as Andrews and Buck, Zeitels said. They're planning a fundraising concert for early 2013.
The gel wouldn't have worked for Buck, but he has a great deal of respect for Zeitels and wants to help with VHI and the concert, he said.
"I felt like my career was kind of hanging there in the balance," Buck said. "I'm helping him with the fundraiser because I think a lot of him as a brilliant surgeon and somebody who was there when I needed him there to help me."
