Landing gear collapsed in Johannesburg.
— -- A mechanical failure aboard a British Airways flight in Johannesburg Monday left a runway closed after the plane tipped to its side.
Flight BA6234 from Port Elizabeth, South Africa, operated by Comair Ltd., was landing shortly after noon at OR Tambo International Airport when the left landing gear collapsed. Emergency officials safely evacuated the six crew and 94 passengers who were taken to the terminal building for further instruction.
“The incident involving a Boeing 737-400, registration ZS-OAA experienced a failure with the landing gear shortly after touching down,” according to a statement by Comair, a BA franchisee. “The aircraft was on the runway for a short period performing standard landing procedures when the crew noticed an unusual vibration which was followed shortly by the collapse of the left landing gear. ACSA [Airports Company South Africa] emergency services were dispatched and responded to the scene immediately and assisted passengers and crew to safely disembark.”
No injuries were reported.
