— -- Spectators eager to see a tidal wave in China got a up close view when the wave got an unexpectedly powerful surge and it washed over them.
Every year, observers gather along the Quiantang River in Hangzhou, China, to observe a tidal bore – a strong tide that pushes up against the river and causes a sudden change in depth, resulting in a massive tidal wave.
On Wednesday, with some extra power from a supermoon, the wave washed over onlookers, forcing many to flee the scene.
There were no reports of any deaths, but photos showed that some of the spectators were injured.
The tidal bore along the Quiantang River usually comes on the 18th day of the 18th month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar.
