Jonie Loves Chachi: Hero Pit Bull Saves Injured Chihuahua Pal
Inseparable pair now looking to find a happy ending: a loving home.
— -- A pit bull is being hailed as a hero for carrying an injured Chihuahua to safety -- and now the two dogs are looking for a loving home together.
Pit bull Jonie was found carrying her injured friend, Chachi, inside her mouth, roaming around a Savannah, Georgia, neighborhood on July 10.
Chachi, a long-haired Chihuahua mix, had suffered an injury to his left eye. Jonie, a white Lab-pit bull mix many times larger than Chachi in size, was walking around with Chachi in her mouth and putting him down every now and then to lick his wound.
The officers who found the duo took them to the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Animal Control Shelter, and Chachi underwent eye surgery. Officials at the animal shelter gave the pair their names based upon the "Happy Days" characters.
The vets were not able to save the severely infected eye, but they managed to stitch it up. The pooch has been recovering in the shelter clinic ever since.
Jonie was finally allowed to reunite with Chachi on July 15. The emotional reunion of the two was completed with “licking, whining, caressing and cuddling,” according to the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department official.
“It’s not every day we get to see such devotion between two special dogs like this,” Christina Sutherin, the Savannah-Chatham animal control officer, told ABC News.
“It would be wonderful if we could find a home that could take both of them," Sutherin said. "But that is not always possible.”
The two dogs are cleared for adoption, up to date on vaccines and are heartworm negative. Chachi has been neutered.
The cause of the eye injury on Chachi was unclear.
