Makeup 101: Face Contouring Tips for a Natural, Everyday Look
Makeup guru Bobbi Brown offers contouring tips.
— -- Contouring is the makeup trend that's being popularized by celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj.
Bobbi Brown, editor in chief of Yahoo Beauty, appeared on "Good Morning America" to talk about the trend as part of Yahoo Your Day, a collaboration between "GMA" and Yahoo experts.
"Contouring right now is huge. It's one of the biggest trends," Brown said, pointing out that the average person would have "a very hard time pulling that off." "If you're a good makeup artist, you can make it look natural."
Brown explained the contouring basics while demonstrating how to contour someone's face to achieve a contoured daytime look.
"Contour is what you do when you want to change the shape of your face. It's done with a dark color, a light color. And you are almost sculpting your face. So you are -- people do it on their noses. They do it on their eyes. They do it on their foreheads," she said.
Brown said contouring works for high fashion photography or on the runway, but said that for daily life, the right way for the average woman to achieve a contoured look is with dimension.
"You could use a bronzer to maybe give your cheeks a little bit of glow. You can use a little bit of even a moisturizer or a highlighter on the top of your cheekbone to bring things up. You can put a little bit of, you know, shine, if you want, on your nose, a little bit of light color," she said. "What you don't want to do is contour so you don't look natural."
She added: "You don't want to draw outside of your lip line, doesn't look natural. You don't want -- you cannot change the shape of your nose. You can make your nose -- if your nose is one of the features you're trying to diminish, you can use a little bit of bronzer on the whole nose to kind of take away any kind of lightness. You can do that. But you want to make sure that whatever you do, you still look as pretty and natural as most women should look.”
