Mother's Day 2015: DIY Craft Gift Ideas

Customizable DIY crafts can make great Mother’s Day gifts.

— -- Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and if you’re still on the quest to find the perfect present for Mom, consider customizable DIY crafts.

They’re easy, affordable and could give you the chance to really express your love to your mother in an unforgettable way.

Katie Brown, Yahoo’s editor in chief of DIY, showed ABC News’ Reena Ninan some easy-to-make craft ideas -- including a decorative trivet and an apron.

Brown appeared on “GMA” as part of the Yahoo Your Day collaboration.

The Craft Ideas
TRANSPARENCY PHOTO PROJECT
Materials: Floating frame; translucent glass paint; photo copied onto a transparency sheet; spray glue
Tools: Scissors; masking tape
Instructions

  • 1. Cut out your “person” or image from the copy, leaving the background out of it. It’s best to have a silhouette.
  • 2. Spray the image with glue and apply it to the inside of the front piece of glass, the place the glass back into the frame.
  • 3. Mask off the inside of the back glass with stripes and paint them with translucent glass paint. Let the paint dry and peel off the tape, then place the glass back into frame. You can also skip the paint, if you prefer it a little simpler.

PHOTO MAGNET

Materials: Magnetic sheet (with adhesive if you can find it; photo; ruler
Tools: Spray adhesive (if you don’t have sticky back on your magnetic sheet); utility knife
Instructions

  • 1. Trim your photo to the size of your magnetic sheet and attach it. Use spray glue if it does not have a sticky back.
  • 2. Use a ruler to guide your utility knife and slice a pattern into the photo.

ART-WRAPPED VASES

Materials: Spray Adhesive; your kid’s artwork; glass cylinder vase; LED candle

Instructions

  • 1. Cut the artwork to neatly wrap around the cylinder once
  • 2. Use spray adhesive to attach.
  • 3. Place the LED candle inside the vases

"I LOVE U" WREATH

Materials: Grapevine and berry vines; wire; ribbon; floral wire; spray paint

Tools: Scissors

Instructions

  • 1. Shape the berry vines and grapevine strands into the letters “I”, a heart shape, and “U”- use floral wire to wrap them up.
  • 2. Spray them different colors (we used shades of pink and red), and let them dry.
  • 3. Link them together vertically with the wire.
  • 4. Create a hook with wire and attach it to the top, then cover the hook with ribbon.

HEART STAMP APRON

Materials: Large cloth napkin; ribbon; card stock; fabric paint; Stitch witch (Iron-on adhesive tape)

Tools: Scissors; pencil with eraser top; dish for paint

Instructions

  • 1. Center napkin edge to the ribbon to create a waistband with ties, then iron it in place with a little Stitch Witch
  • 2. Cut out a heart from card stock.
  • 3. Place the heart on the apron, dip a pencil into a small amount of paint and begin stamping the eraser around the heart. Re-dip eraser into paint as needed. Let the apron dry.

HANDMADE TRIVET

Materials: Child’s artwork; Mod Podge; tile; cork

Tools: Paint brush; utility knife; cutting mat

Instructions

  • 1. Place tile on the cork and slice off the excess with a utility knife. Glue them together with Mod Podge and let dry.
  • 2. Trim the artwork to just a bit smaller than the tile, glue it to top of the tile with Mod Podge and let dry.
  • 3. Add more coats of Mod Podge for a seal and protection, letting it thoroughly dry in between coats.

KIDS' ART DISH TOWELS

Materials: Flour sack Cloth dish towels; fabric markers; Xerox copy of child’s line drawing; card board

Tools: Sewing pins; hot iron

Instructions

  • 1. Place a piece of cardboard under a dish towel where you want the drawing to be transferred. Position the drawing between the cardboard and the dish towel.
  • 2. Pin the towel as tightly as possible to the cardboard. Insert pins at a low angle so they go in flat.
  • 3. Trace the artwork with a fabric marker.
  • 4. Remove the cardboard and drawing and pass a hot iron over the art to seal it.
