Alleged Family Theft Ring Busted in Arizona

-- A family of five is under arrest after Arizona police accused them of stealing more than $15,000 from retail stores.

Elizabeth Rodriguez-Alvarez, her daughters Terri Yvette Vargas and Lizzette Vargas, son Mario Vargas, and son-in-law Jose Alvarez-Burgos were arrested Friday on a raft of theft, fraud and trafficking in stolen property charges, according to local station KTVK.

Terri Vargas was allegedly captured on video two months prior to her arrest, stuffing stolen goods into a bag inside a mall that she then carried outside, all while accompanied by her brother, Mario.

Mario Vargas faces an additional aggravated robbery charge for allegedly pepper-spraying a mall security guard who pursued him and his sister during the alleged getaway from Arrowhead mall in Glendale.

Police have dubbed them “The Family Affair" and say they have been stealing from stores like Victoria’s Secret and Dillard’s since November. One member of the family would typically steal while another would distract clerks and guards, authorities say.

“They were relatively successful until we caught them,” said Officer Holmes of the Phoenix Police Department.

Police said they found a stash of stolen merchandise at the family's home after making the arrests.

The family was allegedly trading the stolen items for drugs and would hold yard sales and put the stolen items up for sale, police said.

The family members, who could not be reached today by ABC News, have not yet entered pleas.

Mario Vargas and Jose Alvarez-Burgos were released on bond. Elizabeth Rodriguez-Alvarez was released from police custody with supervision while her daughters, Terri Yvette Vargas and Lizzette Vargas, are being held without bail, according to authorities.

They are all scheduled to appear in court again later this month.
