W A S H I N G T O N, August 3 -- Tonight, Nightline looks at the story of American soldiers in World War II who were prisoners of Japan and forced to work for Japanese companies as slave labor. They are now seeking compensation but the U.S. government has told them that they are out of luck. Nightline's Chris Bury will talk to Professor John Power of the Massachusets Institute of Technology.

John Dower is currently on sabbatical from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he teaches modern Japanese history and US-Japan relations. Professor Dower is most recently the author of "Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II," which won the Pulitzer Prize in Letters for General Nonfiction and the National Book Award in Nonfiction. Professor Dower's writings are cited extensively in legal briefs involved in the POW reparation matters.
