Rick Perry 2012: Republican Presidential Candidate

Perry has written two books -- "On My Honor: Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts Are Worth Fighting For," and "Fed Up!" -- a tome that criticizes big government, calls for greater freedom for state governments and blames Washington politicians for hurting America.

While promoting "Fed Up!" in November 2010, Perry said he was not interested in running for president. He first expressed interest in the presidency in May 2011.

The Texas governor is an avid athlete and has participated in a triathlon. He enjoys jogging with his dogs and boasts of shooting a coyote to protect his daughter's dog while running. Perry is a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights and is said to carry a handgun with him when laws allow it.

Perry resides in West Austin, Texas, with his wife. They do not live in the Texas governor's mansion, which is under repair.
