Why the state is significant:

  • While Washington is now considered a blue state, voters weren’t always so consistent. From 1972 to 1984 they supported Republicans in the general election.
  • Washington has 12 electoral votes. In the West, only Texas and California have more.
  • Fast facts:

  • The Evergreen State has voted for the Democratic presidential candidate in the last seven elections, backing the eventual general election winner four times: Bill Clinton in 1992 and 1996, and Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012.
  • In the 2008 presidential race, Barack Obama defeated John McCain 57 percent to 40 percent.
