Six-time Olympic gold medalist Amy Van Dyken is being treated at an Arizona hospital after she severed her spine in an all-terrain vehicle accident this weekend.
The 41-year-old swimmer hit a curb in a restaurant parking lot and plummeted 5 to 7 feet, according to The Associated Press, rendering her unable to feel anything touching her legs.
Van Dyken's family said in a statement that the athlete "awoke within hours of surgery acting like her typical spunky, boisterous, ebullient self and has spent the last 24 hours entertaining her family and her medical staff in the ICU.'"
As one of the best U.S. swimmers, Van Dyken dominated at the 1996 Atlanta games, taking home four gold medals. She delivered again at the 200 Sydney games, where she won two gold medals before retiring.
Van Dyken is married to Denver Broncos veteran Tom Rouen.
