Sheffield: Torre Treated Blacks Differently

Former Yankees Star Says Blacks on Team Had Issues With Manager

"If I took what Barry Bonds took, why don't I look like him?" Sheffield asked. "I trusted this man. He allowed me to stay in his house."

The comments come just one month after Sheffield told the June issue of GQ magazine that there are more Latin than black players in Major League Baseball because Latin players are easier to control.

"I called it years ago. What I called is that you're going to see more black faces, but there ain't no English going to be coming out," Sheffield told the magazine. "[It is about] being able to tell [Latin players] what to do -- being able to control them."

"Where I'm from, you can't control us," Sheffield said, referring to black people. "These are the things my race demands. So, if you're equally good as this Latin player, guess who's going to get sent home? I know a lot of players that are home now can outplay a lot of these guys."

The Yankees' media department declined to comment on Sheffield's remarks.

Schwarz called Sheffield "one of the more blunt people you'll ever meet."

"He tells you exactly what he thinks," Schwarz said. "I don't know how carefully he thinks about what he tells you before he tells you something. He's not afraid to take a stance on anything."
