— -- Adrian Peterson has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions, meaning that the star running back will miss the Minnesota Vikings' final game at Mall of America Field.

The Vikings announced that Peterson had been downgraded from doubtful to out on their official Twitter account Saturday afternoon.

Peterson, who has rushed for more yards than any other player in Mall of America Field's 32-year history, has been plagued by a groin injury suffered last week against Cincinnati and a foot injury sustained earlier this month.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier had hinted on Friday that Peterson, the leading rusher in franchise history, might play against Detroit.

But with Peterson and backup Toby Gerhart both sidelined, the Vikings (4-10-1) will have to turn to Matt Asiata and Joe Banyard at running back.

Peterson will finish the season with 1,266 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 279 carries. It marks the second-lowest yardage total of Peterson's career, behind only his injury-plagued 2011 campaign.
