— -- CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs chose left-handed pitcher Mark Pawelek of Springville High School in Utah with the 20th pick of Tuesday's draft. Shortly after making the choice, the Cubs announced they had reached a contract agreement with Pawelek. The terms were not disclosed. "I'm not going to pass up an opportunity to sign with the Cubs," Pawelek said. He said he hopes to someday join a rotation that features former draft choices like Kerry Wood and Mark Prior. "I've grown up watching them and saw how good Wood and Prior were," he said. "To possibly be able to join that staff is a dream come true." Pawelek was 10-0 and did not allow an earned run during the 2005 season. He struck out 132 batters and allowed just 16 hits in 63 innings with a fastball that hit the mid 90s. Pawelek went 36-2 over his four-year high school career, setting a state record with 476 strikeouts. "He's a three- to four-pitch guy who threw very well every time we saw him and his consistency gives him a strong upside," said John Stockstill, the Cubs' scouting director.
