Can Lee Westwood finally break through?

— -- Lee Westwood, according to the smart guys in Vegas, was a 65-1 long shot to win the PGA Championship. Those odds are dropping.

Westwood shot his best-ever PGA Championship round Thursday, a 5-under 66, that gives him a tie for the lead. Then again, that doesn't always mean much when it comes to Westwood.

This is Westwood's 67th major. If he won -- and he's come close before with eight top-3s -- it would be the most majors played by someone before capturing his first major championship. Westwood, 41, has long been regarded as one of the best players never to have won a major.

"You know, it's a frustrating game," Westwood said. "Anybody in this room that plays it knows how frustrating it is and how it can get to you, and how much you can swear."

Westwood not only is trying to win his first major, but he's also trying to squeeze his way onto the European Ryder Cup team. Westwood has played in eight Ryder Cups but isn't an automatic qualifier at this point in the season.

"I don't want to rely on a [captain's] pick," Westwood said. "I always think that there comes a bit more pressure if you're a selection ... because you've got to try and sort of justify your pick almost.

"And I don't want to be in that position. I'd rather qualify for the team."

Winning a major would do that.

In the meantime, Westwood is enjoying his view from atop the leaderboard. And enjoying the questions about his workouts.

Q: "Have you been doing extra fitness work, because you're looking in quite good [shape]."

Westwood: "Very nice of you to say and notice. Which part of me?"
