Matt Simms replaces Geno Smith

— -- EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Jets have a full-blown quarterback controversy.

Tired of watching his inept offense, Jets coach Rex Ryan finally made a change at quarterback, benching rookie Geno Smith in favor of Matt Simms to start the second half of Sunday's loss against the Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium.

Smith, continuing his month-long slump, completed four of 10 passes in the first half, throwing an interception in the final minute that set up the Dolphins' second field goal.

Miami (6-6) led, 6-0, at halftime before pulling away in the second half for a 23-3 victory over sliding New York (5-7), which has lost three consecutive games.

Ryan had been loyal to Smith, a second-round pick, but the offense has produced only one touchdown in its last 36 possessions under the former West Virginia star.

The Jets were awful in the first half against the rival Dolphins, managing just 39 total yards and two first downs with Smith at quarterback.

Simms also struggled Sunday, completing 9 of 18 passes for 79 yards and an interception.

Smith has gone five straight games without a touchdown pass. Simms is a first-year player who had appeared only twice in mop-up assignments. The son of former New York Giants star Phil Simms, he was undrafted in 2012 out of Tennessee, making the Jets roster this season with a strong preseason.
