— -- DETROIT -- Not only were the New York Jets embarrassed by the Buffalo Bills in a 38-3 Monday night defeat at Ford Field, but they lost their best player to injury.

Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson suffered a toe injury in the second quarter, was taken to the locker room before halftime and did not return to the game. The team didn't immediately disclose the nature of the injury.

Wilkerson, a first-round pick in 2011, has not missed a game in his career due to injury. That he wasn't able to return is significant because he's considered perhaps the most durable player on the team.

A significant injury would be a crushing blow to the Jets, whose defense relies on Wilkerson's ability as an every-down player.

Wilkerson leads the team with 4.5 sacks.
