Outcome in Jameis Winston Hearing Is Weeks Away
The college football star addressed sexual assault allegations in statement.
— -- Florida State University quarterback Jameis Winston refuted a woman’s sexual assault claims during a student code of conduct hearing Wednesday, stating that the two had consensual sex – and that the woman had multiple opportunities to stop their encounter, but instead willingly participated.
Winston declined to answer questions about the episode, but read a five-page statement during the hearing, detailing his interactions with his accuser on Dec. 6 and 7, 2012, first at a Tallahassee nightclub, Potbelly’s, then later at his apartment. The statement was obtained by ESPN.
“Rape is a vicious crime. The only thing as vicious as rape is falsely accusing someone of rape,” he said in the statement, his first specific comments about that night.
The unnamed woman also testified during the two-day hearing. She claims Winston sexually assaulted her.
A decision in the hearing is expected in two to three weeks.
Prosecutors declined to pursue criminal charges, but Winston is accused of four university conduct code violations, including two related to sexual misconduct. If found in violation of any of the violations, the sophomore could face punishment ranging from a reprimand to expulsion from school.
The woman’s attorney, John Clune, stated his wishes following the hearing.
“We want him to be found responsible and we want him to be expelled from school. Knowing the facts of the case, I think there is a very, very good chance of that happening,” Clune said.
Winston won the Heisman Trophy last season, college football’s highest honor. His next game is Saturday, in the ACC championship game against Georgia Tech.
