— -- PEARLAND, Texas -- Former major leaguer Darryl Hamilton has been killed in a murder-suicide at a suburban Houston home, police said Monday. He was 50.

Police say Hamilton was found Sunday after he was fatally shot at the home in the community of Pearland.

Police Lt. Patrick Savage says an initial investigation determined Hamilton was shot several times and that a woman in the home died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She was identified as Monica Jordan.

Police say Hamilton and Jordan's 14-month-old child was found unharmed at the home.

"All of us at Major League Baseball are shocked and saddened by this tragedy," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "Darryl followed a successful 13-year career on the field by assembling a multifaceted career in our game, working for MLB Advanced Media and in our Baseball Operations Department before moving on to MLB Network.

"He was a talented and personable individual, and we were proud to call him a member of the Baseball Family. On behalf of Major League Baseball, I extend my deepest sympathies to Darryl's family and his many friends throughout our game."

Hamilton played 13 seasons in the majors before retiring in 2001, and the standout center fielder was part of the 2000 New York Mets team that went to the World Series. He also played for the Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies over his career and was currently working as an analyst for the MLB Network.

"All of us are stunned and saddened with the news of this horrible tragedy, something that is impossible for us to even begin to comprehend," Brewers president Doug Melvin said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers go to Darryl's family and friends, and he will be greatly missed.

"Darryl was a wonderful player for our organization, but more importantly, he was a true gentleman and a great friend to many here."

Melvin also served as general manager of the Rangers when Hamilton played his lone season in Texas.
