Roy Arrested on Domestic Violence Charges

L I T T L E T O N, Oct. 23 -- The wife of Patrick Roy, the NHLswinningest goalie, called 911 because she was afraid of what herhusband would do as they argued about in-laws, according to apolice report today.

Michele Roy was not hurt during the dispute at their home earlySunday, but Roy admitted pulling two bedroom doors off hinges whenhis wife called Greenwood Village police and then hung up withoutspeaking, the report said.

The somber Colorado Avalanche goalie, accompanied by hisparents, sister and brother, stood with his hands clasped behindhis back at a brief court appearance today.

The initial hearing was postponed until Nov. 7. Roy remainedfree on a $750 bail and left by a side door without comment. Hiswife was absent.

The judge also issued a restraining order that is standard indomestic dispute cases, which requires Roy only to refrain fromalcohol and illegal drugs. He is permitted to be in contact withhis family and to travel with the team to out-of-state games.

Has Not Been Formally Charged

After the Avalanches practice, Roy read a brief statement,noting that he could not comment on his arrest on the advice of hislawyer. He also asked that the public respect his familys privacy.

Obviously, this is creating a distraction, and my wish is thatthis distraction will be over soon, he said. I am thankful forthe support I am getting from my family and every one of myteammates.

Teammates Adam Deadmarsh, Ray Bourque and Aaron Miller supportedRoy, saying they believe he will remain focused on his work. Theteams next game is at home Wednesday against Nashville.

Lawyer Pamela Mackey, who represents Roy, emphasized after thehearing that Roy has not been formally charged. The 35-year-oldgoalie was arrested for investigation of misdemeanor criminalmischief and misdemeanor domestic violence counts.

If convicted, he faces a maximum of a year in the county jailand a $1,000 fine on the criminal mischief count. No specificpenalty is called for on the domestic violence charge, said aspokesman for the Arapahoe County district attorneys office.
