Crazy Finish

Gonzaga (25-6), which seemed to score easily throughout thegames, couldn't find the basket in the last three minutes until thefinal possession. And even then it took a second effort by Calvary.

Adam Hall blocked Dan Dickau's shot, but Calvary put it in forthe one-point edge.

Mason then missed a driving shot and time expired as playersscrambled for the loose ball.

Gonzaga will play either No. 4 Oklahoma or No. 13 Indiana Statein the second round on Sunday.

Virginia was led by Mason with a career-high 30 points, whileDonald Hand had 14.

Dickau, who sat out last season after transferring fromWashington, scored 21 points in the first half, including four3-pointers.

Gonzagas Defense Was Key

After barely missing the Final Four in 1999 and reaching theregional semifinals last year, the Bulldogs don't sneak up onanybody. In the past two years, they knocked out second-seededteams in the second round.

But, just like other higher seeds in what is becoming anupset-filled tournament, the Cavaliers looked off guard by thefast-paced, rough-playing Zags.

Trailing by 13, the Cavaliers had a 13-4 run capped by KeithFriel's third 3 in a row with 9:03 left that cut it to 70-66.
