— -- NEW ORLEANS -- The Minnesota Vikings got their first look at Teddy Bridgewater on Sunday afternoon, albeit under unexpected circumstances.

Bridgewater replaced Matt Cassel after the quarterback injured his left foot on a scramble during the Vikings' field-goal drive early in the second quarter. Cassel was carted to the locker room for X-rays after trainer Eric Sugarman examined his foot.

The Vikings announced Cassel suffered a toe injury and would not return to the game. Bridgewater completed 12 of 20 passes for 150 yards, but New Orleans won 20-9.

Bridgewater, meanwhile, completed his first NFL pass to Greg Jennings for 10 yards.

The Vikings named Cassel their starting quarterback at the beginning of the season, and had planned not to have a "quick hook" with him, as coach Mike Zimmer put it.

But if Cassel's injury keeps him out for an extended period of time, the Vikings could wind up turning things over to Bridgewater in a season that's already deviated significantly from their plans.
