Moms and dads listen up: A new line of video games and video game consoles have been unleashed for the holidays and we're here to help you sort through the games and gear your kids -- and perhaps you yourself.

It's been more than 25 years since home video game consoles hit the mainstream with Atari's 2600. But we've come a long way since the days of Pac-Man and Space Invaders. Today's games run the gamut from interactive adventures that put you in the lead role of a Hollywood-style action movie to games that put you in charge of tens of thousands of medieval warriors laying siege to a massive castle.

Video game stores are stocked with hundreds of games for young and old alike, and it can be tough to know what's right, what's good and what's appropriate for the gamer in your life.

To make matters more confusing, a new generation of video game consoles from Sony, Nintendo and -- less recently -- Microsoft feature new and very different strengths and weaknesses. If you're not a gamer yourself, it could be enough to make your head spin.

But don't worry. ABCNEWS.com is here to help.

This guide is meant to make sure you get the games and the machines that'll make the lucky gamer in your life smile from ear to ear, and to give you a little education in video games while you're at it.
