Best Gadgets of the Week: Amazon Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Paperwhite, Nokia's Lumia 920

Sept. 9, 2012 — -- intro: In the gadget world, weeks just don't get busier than this. Some of the biggest tech companies in the world -- Nokia, Amazon, Motorola and Sony -- took to the stage this week to release their own gadgets, likely before Apple dominates the headlines next week with its iPhone 5.

There were lots of different products introduced, but it's clear that it's all about the screen right now.

From the new Nokia Lumia 920 big-screened smartphone to Amazon's new Kindle Fire HDs to Sony's 42-inch 4K TV, there are now really great screens for every situation. Check out our picks from this very busy week in tech.

Today is an important step in that journey," Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop told ABC News on the eve of introducing the Lumia 920. The phone is one that the company hopes will set it back on track. It runs Microsoft's forthcoming Windows Phone 8, has a beautiful colored polycarbonate body, wireless charging, and a high-quality 8-megapixel, PureView camera. No word on pricing, but it should be out later this year in the United States.

quicklist: 2title: Motorola Droid Razr HD text: Right on the heels of Nokia's event, Motorola's CEO took the stage in New York to unveil a trio of new Android 4.0 phones for Verizon. The Droid Razr HD and Razr HD Maxx have 4.7-inch 720p displays, dual-core Snapdragon S4 processors, 8-megapixel rear cameras, NFC, and Verizon LTE service.

The difference between them? Battery life. The Maxx has a larger battery that promises 32 hours of use on a single charge. There's also the Razr M, which has a smaller screen and cheaper $99 price. The Razr M will be out next week, while the other two will be out before the holidays.

quicklist: 3title: Amazon Kindle Fire HDtext: Amazon, on the other hand, focused on the bigger screens this week with a new set of Fire HD tablets. With 7-inch and 8.9-inch versions, the tablets have been upgraded with dual-core processors, improved MIMO Wi-Fi, stereo speakers, 16GB of storage, and front-facing HD cams for Skype video chatting.

The 7-inch screen has a 1280 x 800 resolution, while the 8.9-inch version is looking to compete with the new iPad with a 1920x1200-resolution screen. Both tablets have access to Amazon's large library of books, movies, TV shows, and magazines. The 7-inch version starts at $199 and the 8.9-inch version at $299.

The Paperwhite has an EInk display like the previous Kindles, but this time gets a light so you can read on it in light and dark situations. There's a lot of special technology behind it, but you can adjust the light and it still has eight weeks of battery (even with the light on). There are also some cool new reading features, including Time to Read, which tells you how long it will be until you finish the chapter you are reading.

So, what in the world does 25K buy you in a TV? Well, for one, a massive 84-inch display. But it's not the size alone that cost so much cash -- it's the resolution. The screen has four times more resolution (4K) than a full HD TV. It has 8 million individual pixels (3840 x 2160). And then there is the killer speakers, including a 10-unit speaker system with a subwoofer, and the regular Internet services baked in, including Netflix, YouTube and more.
