— -- As Chief Operating Officer at Facebook, Silicon Valley power broker Sheryl Sandberg is No. 2 in command at the world's largest social network. But how does she keep tabs on her own social network? To kick off our new "Talking Your Tech" series about living with technology, Sandberg opened up to us about her gadgets; managing e-mail, instant message and texts; and how she keeps tracks of all those virtual friends.

What she brings to work with her every day

A Windows laptop computer, an Apple iPad, Android and Blackberry phones. "I try everything," she says.

Her friend roster

"I have a lot…over 3,000…I don't know all of them, but I have met all of them in one shape or form." She will accept a friend request if there's a personal connection. "I either know them myself, or they're a friend of a friend."

TV watching

It's on the iPad. Her show of choice right now: Fox's canceled Lie to Me, which starred Tim Roth.

Communication

As COO of Facebook in charge of a workforce of 3,000, there are a lot of people vying for her attention. How does she communicate with them? "I do everything…and you have to." Some people prefer using instant-message chat, like Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, she says, while her sister likes her to call on the cellphone. "For my husband (Dave Goldberg)," she says, "e-mail is better."

Going unwired

She says she can do it, but it's "painful." When traveling, she requests flights with Wi-Fi. At home, she turns off her phone at night, "so I won't get woken up." Her rituals: "I check my e-mail the first thing in the morning, and the last thing at night."
