— -- Google's plans for a new headquarters have hit a snag after the search giant lost out to LinkedIn in a battle for Mountain View, California, real estate.

Vying for a chunk of 2.2 million commercial square feet in the North Bayshore area, Google walked away with approximately one quarter of what was up for grabs after a city council vote Tuesday night.

The largest amount of office space -- 1.4 million square feet -- was awarded to LinkedIn.

The decision throws a serious wrench in the Mountain View utopia Google envisioned -- including glass canopies, movable rooms within the buildings, bike trails and retail.

Google is remaining tight-lipped on what its next options are.

"We're pleased Council has decided to advance our Landings site and will continue to work with the City on Google's future in Mountain View," David Radcliffe, vice president of real estate and workplace services at Google said in a statement.

The company moved into its famous Googleplex in Mountain View in 2004 -- solidifying the city's status as a major tech hub.

As the community continues to grow, housing supply and traffic congestion have been issues catching any attention of city council.

While the buildings would have increased Google's office square footage, the plan was to also open the campus up to the community to create a lively neighborhood feel with retail, restaurants and bicycle paths.
