Samsung Solid-State Drive Video Ad Riles Up Reddit

Aug. 26, 2013 — -- Samsung has always been known for airing pretty attention-grabbing advertisements, at least when it comes to its Galaxy S phones. But a leaked Samsung ad is grabbing attention for other reasons.

In the ad, which is for Samsung's 840 EVO Series Solid State drive, actors pretend to be very excited by the fast drive, and "pretend" is the key word. The video, which has been pulled down a few times, though still remains up at DabsDotCom's YouTube channel, has been getting a lot criticism from the Reddit community in a thread titled "Samsung ad featuring possibly the world's worst actors."

In the three-minute long video, actors play up how excited they are by the drive's easy-to-transfer features. "Wow! This is the SSD, right?" says one businessman. "It's so thin and light," another businessman says with extremely fake excitement. "Aw, I did it, do you see that?" a female actor says, adding a longer "Ahh" upon being handed a screwdriver to replace her current laptop's hard drive with the new Samsung's 840 EVO drive. "I never imagined this SSD would be so good," the businessman chimes in again.

You have to watch the video to see that the actors seem to be delivering the lines without much real emotion. The video has been pulled by a few others who have posted it to YouTube. However, it can still be watched in full here.

The post featuring the video has been making the rounds on Reddit, and one commenter has joined the conversation, claiming to have played one of the businessmen in the video. According to the commenter, Damienf1, the South Korean company cast American actors, even though it was never supposed to air in the U.S., but just in Korea.

He says the script was written by "non-native English speakers" and that it was a "promotional video, not a TV commercial." Additionally, they asked the actors to speak slow since it was going to be "dubbed over in Korean." He added that he was capable of doing a better job, but simply gets "paid to follow the directors instructions."

Damienf1 did not respond to ABC News' request for comment. Samsung has also not responded to ABC News' repeated requests for a comment on the video.

Even if the company did respond, it might not be able to do anything to reverse the reaction. As of this writing, the video had over 2,055 votes and 1,869 comments. Some of the comments point out the terrible acting while others point out some of the sexist themes in the video.

"Why did they make the woman so much dumber than the men?" StoneMcCready commented. "When I'm not helping my children with homework or looking at pictures of them, I leave the computer on while doing housework! I didn't realize they had computers in 1950," DarknStormies responded. And there was InflamedMonkeyButts's comment: "But why would a woman purchase a product unless it can be used for housework and childrearing? The only reason I even own a computer is so I can put my freshly baked pies in front of the cooling fan."

As Reddit commenter Mosqeeto says, "Certain parties also don't understand that once something is on the internet, it's on the internet forever."
