N E W  Y O R K,   Dec. 31 -- Among the many weird and wonderful things the Internet has wrought is the proliferation of Web cams that make it easy to view the world without leaving your desk.

The relatively simple technology behind these cameras has been put to countless creative uses, knitting together people and places in new ways. With a few clicks, users can see everything from current weather conditions at the poles to the status of the coffee pot at a Cambridge University computer lab.
