Jan. 13, 2008 — -- Sir Edmund Hillary, 88 -- Mountaineer who became a mid-20th century hero, as the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

"I think we just climb mountains because we enjoy it."

Carl N. Karcher, 90 -- Founder of Carl's Jr. hamburger chain.

Philip Agee, 72 -- Former CIA agent who, after exposing CIA secrets and agents in a 1975 book, was stripped of his citizenship and lived in exile.

"Our purpose was political. It was to try to put a stop to the dirty work. In this case it was simply dirty."
