Baby Girl Born in 'Good Health' After Mother 'Brutally Attacked'
Rachel Poole gave birth to a baby girl after she allegedly was attacked at home.
Nov. 2, 2013 — -- An El Paso, Texas, woman who is recovering in the hospital from a stabbing attack delivered a healthy baby girl, her stepfather said.
Rachel Poole, 31, gave birth to her daughter, Isabella, at University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, following a successful cesarean section, her stepfather, Gary Jones, told ABCNews.com.
Poole's mother, Rebecca Jones, declined to comment to ABCNews.com on her daughter's condition, but said the baby girl "is in good health."
Poole was taken to the hospital on Wednesday evening after she was "brutally attacked" by a 19-year-old who broke into her home and stabbed her repeatedly with a knife, according to an El Paso Police Department news release.
Corey Bernard Moss, of Fort Bliss, Texas, was charged with criminal attempted capital murder after he attacked Poole, who was nine months pregnant, in her kitchen while she was on FaceTime with her husband, El Paso Police Department spokesman Det. Mike Baranyay told ABCNews.com.
Moss, who had gone to confront Poole about money he owed her, reportedly entered the woman's home through a rear door and waited for her to return, according to an arrest affidavit.
When the woman arrived home, she was using FaceTime to speak with her husband, Justin Poole, who is deployed overseas, the affidavit said. Poole was video-chatting with her husband when Moss allegedly attacked her from behind and repeatedly stabbed her with a stainless steel folding knife.
The woman, who recognized Moss, screamed out his name during the attack. Justin Poole, who was still on the phone with his wife during the alleged assault, called Moss' coworkers to get help, the affidavit said.
Moss then fled the home and reportedly called someone to pick him up and drive him to the Fort Bliss military base, according to the affidavit.
Moss is a soldier in training on Fort Bliss military base, police said.
Once Moss returned, his coworkers, along with responding police officers, took him into custody at a command group center on the base, the affidavit said. The knife Moss used to stab Poole was found in the car he was driven home in, according to the affidavit.
It was not clear how Justin Poole knew Moss' coworkers, Baranyay said.
Moss was turned over to El Paso Police detectives and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility, where he was being held on $150,000 bond, a jail spokesman told ABCNews.com.
It was not known if Moss had an attorney, a spokesman at the jail said.
ABC News' attempts to contact the El Paso District Attorney's Office were not immediately successful.
Meanwhile, Rachel Poole was able to call 911 and was rushed to the hospital, where she was treated for stab wounds and fractures to her face and body, according to the police news release. Upon admittance, she was in critical condition.
Poole had a C-section scheduled for next week but doctors couldn't "do anything with [her] injuries unless they got Isabella out," Gary Jones said.
Jones said Poole may need eye socket reconstruction, but doctors are waiting for swelling in the eye to go down. He added that one of Poole's vertebrae was out of place following the attack, and she suffered a collapsed lung.
Meanwhile, Justin Poole returned to El Paso and has posted pictures of himself and his newborn daughter on his Facebook page, writing, "Rachel Poole is fighting to beat this."
A GoFundMe.com page has been created in honor of the Poole family in hopes of raising $5,000.
The page, created by Brett Lively, who said he was a friend and former roommate of the new dad, said Poole remained in critical condition.
ABC News' calls to University Medical Center in El Paso were not immediately returned.
