Burglary Suspects in Mustang Convertible Lead Wild Police Chase in L.A.

— -- Two burglary suspects were caught on live television leading police on a wild chase in Los Angeles Thursday afternoon that included driving the wrong way down streets and shaking hands with onlookers before they were taken into custody.
The suspects were seen in a dark blue Mustang convertible doing donuts on Hollywood Boulevard, which was wet from the rain. At one point, the passenger stood up in the moving car and appeared to wave to police.
After merging onto congested Highway 101, the men were momentarily blocked by a tour bus. The passenger then stood up and threw an object at the bus, and the driver maneuvered around it shortly after.
They were also seen driving on the highway shoulder and driving the wrong way on other Los Angeles streets.
Around 3 p.m., one of the Mustang's front tires popped, and the car began to wobble. The suspects eventually stopped in a South Los Angeles neighborhood, where they were seen greeting and shaking hands with dozens of onlookers.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's officers took them into custody after 3:30 p.m. as the crowd looked on. They were not immediately charged.
Authorities had received a call reporting a burglary in the nearby city of Cerritos, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Office.
At one point during the chase, the driver lowered the Mustang's convertible top. The suspects also stopped and talked to police for a few minutes in downtown Los Angeles before taking off again, according to KABC.
ABC-owned station in Los Angeles KABC broadcast the chase live from its news helicopter, interrupting a showing of "General Hospital."
