— -- 1. Sen. Cory Booker Fears 'Voting Rights Act Is Under Threat'
As the country marks 50 years since the Voting Rights Act was signed into law, Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., expressed concern today that the voting rights of many are still “under threat.”
"Well, first, I just want to press the case because many people don't understand that ... the Voting Rights Act is under threat. And these voter ID laws which are being passed in many states have a disproportionate impact on poor folks," he said.
The senator recently introduced the Voting Rights Advancement Act aimed at preventing practices that interfere with citizens’ voting rights, such as requiring voter ID and changing voting locations.
2. US Service Member Among 9 Killed in Attack on Base in Kabul
An American service member and eight Afghan civilian contractors were killed in a Taliban attack on Camp Integrity, a coalition base near Kabul’s airport, culminating a series of high-profile insurgent attacks in the Afghan capital that killed at least 50 people and injured hundreds more Friday.
A suicide bomber at the base's entrance started the attack late Friday. It ended with a gun battle that raged for hours before the four attackers were killed.
Several other coalition service members and civilians were also wounded in the attack. Officials haven't identified the U.S. service member killed in the attack.
3. Delta Plane Forced to Make Emergency Landing After Flying Through Hail Storm
A Delta jet was forced to make an emergency landing at Denver International Airport after it was caught in a hail storm that damaged its windshield and nose cone.
The plane was headed to Salt Lake City from Boston Friday when it was pounded by hail. Passenger Rob Wessman said passengers were holding hands and crying.
"I was nervous," he said. "I was messaging my wife, actually. 'Hey, this is pretty scary.'"
4. Iowa Man Searches for Stolen Wallet With Decades-Old Keepsakes Inside
An Iowa man is desperate to find his wallet that was stolen with his most prized personal mementos inside.
Chuck Smith was at the pool Thursday with his 3-year-old grandson when his wallet was stolen. The wallet had some credit cards and cash, but for Smith, the upsetting part was losing two special items -- a phone number and a receipt -- that he had kept for decades.
The phone number was from May 10, 1974 -- the day he met his wife, Cheryl. She wrote her name and number on a piece of paper and Smith has kept it ever since.
5. Former Teacher Wins Wisconsin's Largest Megabucks Jackpot Ever
A former high school teacher won Wisconsin's biggest Megabucks jackpot ever -- all thanks to a quick trip to pick up a gallon of milk.
John Rumpel, of Milwaukee, won $22.2 million from a Megabucks drawing, the Wisconsin Lottery said in a news release on Friday, marking the biggest Megabucks jackpot ever since the game began in 1992.
Rumpel said he bought the May 30 ticket at a convenience store after his wife asked him to pick up a gallon of milk, ABC affiliate WISN-TV in Milwaukee reported.
