U.S. Military Deaths in War With Iraq

• Sgt. Keman L. Mitchell, 24, of Hilliard, Fla., killed in Kirkuk, Iraq, when he jumped into a 7-foot-deep body of water and failed to resurface, May 26. Members of his squad retrieved him but medical crews could not revive him.

• Pfc. Jeremiah D. Smith, 25, of Odessa, Mo., killed in Baghdad, Iraq, when his vehicle hit unexploded ordnance, May 26.

• Staff Sgt. Brett J. Petriken, 30, of Michigan, killed in As Samawah, Iraq, when a heavy equipment transporter struck his vehicle, May 26.

• Pvt. Kenneth A. Nalley, 19, of Hamburg, Iowa, killed in As Samawah, Iraq, when a heavy equipment transporter struck his vehicle, May 26.

• Maj. Mathew E. Schram, 36, of Wisconsin, killed in Hadithah, Iraq, when the military convoy he was traveling with on a resupply mission encountered enemy fire, May 26.

• Pvt. David Evans, Jr., 18, of Buffalo, N.Y., killed in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq, in an explosion at a facility which contained Iraqi ammunition, May 25.

• Capt. Andrew David LaMont, 31, of Eureka, Calif., killed in a CH-46 Sea-Knight helicopter that went down shortly after take-off in the Shatt Al Hillah Canal, Iraq, May 19.

• Lance Cpl. Jason William Moore, 21, of San Marcos, Calif., killed in a CH-46 Sea-Knight helicopter that went down shortly after take-off in the Shatt Al Hillah Canal, Iraq, May 19.

• 1st Lt. Timothy Louis Ryan, 30, of Aurora, Ill., killed in a CH-46 Sea-Knight helicopter that went down shortly after take-off in the Shatt Al Hillah Canal, Iraq, May 19.

• Staff Sgt. Aaron Dean White, 27, of Shawnee, Okla., killed in a CH-46 Sea-Knight helicopter that went down shortly after take-off in the Shatt Al Hillah Canal, Iraq, May 19.

• Spc. Nathaniel A. Caldwell, 27, of Omaha, Neb., was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, when his vehicle rolled over as he was responding to a civilian call, May 19.

• Lt. Col. Dominic R. Baragona, 42, of Ohio, killed in Iraq when a tractor-trailer jackknifed on the road and collided with Baragona's vehicle, May 19.

• Sgt. Kirk Allen Straseskie, 23, of Beaver Dam, Wis., drowned in a canal near Al Hillah, Iraq, when he attempted to rescue the crewmembers of a Marine CH-46 helicopter that went down, May 19.

• Spc. Rasheed Sahib, 22, of Brooklyn, N.Y., killed in Balad, Iraq, when a fellow soldier's weapon discharged while they were cleaning their weapons, striking Sahib in the chest, May 18.

• Cpl. Douglas Jose Marencoreyes, 28, of Chino, Calif., killed in Iraq when the transport truck he was riding in rolled over, May 18.

• Master Sgt. William L. Payne, 46, of Michigan, killed in Haswah, Iraq, when an unexploded ordnance he was examining exploded, May 16.

• Spc. David T. Nutt, 22, of Blackshear, Ga., killed in Mosul, Iraq, when an Iraqi civilian vehicle cut his loaded 5-ton truck off on the road, causing Nutt to swerve and overturn his vehicle, May 14.

• Lance Cpl. Nicholas Brian Kleiboeker, 19, of Irvington, Ill., killed near Al Hillah, Iraq, when the munitions bunker he was working in caught fire and exploded, May 13.

• Staff Sgt. Patrick Lee Griffin Jr., 31, of Elgin, S.C., killed in action near Diwaniyah, Iraq, when his convoy was ambushed enroute to Baghdad, May 13.

• Lance Cpl. Jakub Henryk Kowalik, 21, of Schaumburg, Ill., killed in action near Diwaniyah, Iraq, when his convoy was ambushed enroute to Baghdad, May 13.

• Pfc. Jose Franci Gonzalez Rodriguez, 19, of Norwalk, Calif., killed in Iraq when an unexploded ordnance detonated, May 12.
