1. 'Tiny Minority of Lawbreakers' Blamed for Renewed Ferguson Violence

Police shot tear gas and smoke canisters at protesters in Ferguson, Mo. overnight, with authorities blaming outsiders for bringing a criminal element to the St. Louis suburb following the shooting death of unarmed teen Michael Brown.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson, speaking at an early-morning press conference, said incidents from a "tiny minority of lawbreakers" prompted the police response, including shots fired and Molotov cocktails thrown.

"Our officers came under heavy gunfire," Johnson said.

Two people were shot and at least 31 people were arrested during Monday night's unrest, Johnson said, with some of those arrested coming from as far away as New York and California.

2. Biggest Ways Google Has Innovated Since Its IPO 10 Years Ago

When Google made its initial public offering 10 years ago today, the company set out on a path that has continually redefined how the world interacts with technology.

Raising $1.2 billion from its from its public debut on August 19, 2004, Google was able to charge forward with an ambitious plan for expansion -- attracting top talent, creating jobs and snapping up other companies, such as YouTube, along the way.

While search still remains at the heart of the company, Google has used their IPO as a springboard for innovation. Here are 10 Google products from Google that have reshaped the business and how we interact with technology in our daily routines.

3. 'Saturday Night Live' Announcer Don Pardo Dead at 96

Longtime announcer Don Pardo, the booming voice of “Saturday Night Live,” died Monday at 96, an NBC spokesman confirmed.

Pardo, born in 1918, joined NBC Radio in 1944. He gained the job after visiting 30 Rockefeller Plaza for a tour – he said “hello” to a supervisor, and that’s all it took, according to a 1994 NPR profile.

Pardo gained popularity for news coverage, including war updates and early reports about the Nov. 22, 1963 shooting of John F. Kennedy. Pardo made the successful switch to television, his baritone voice becoming omnipresent on game shows such as “Jeopardy!” and “The Price is Right.”

By 1975, NBC needed an announcer for a late-night sketch comedy show, "NBC's Saturday Night," later known as "Saturday Night Live." Pardo was selected, and he served in that role for all but one of the show’s seasons, introducing generations of the show’s cast and guests – from Chevy Chase and John Belushi to Gilda Radner and Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey and Will Ferrell and Kristin Wiig.

4. Missing Woman's Body Found in Mine Shaft, Alleged Lover Arrested

The body of pregnant Marine wife Erin Corwin was found in at the bottom of a mine shaft, authorities said Monday, ending a massive two month search.

Corwin's alleged lover, Christopher Brandon Lee, 24, was arrested in Alaska and charged with her murder, two months after she disappeared from her southern California home.

Lee was apprehended during a traffic stop on Sunday at 9 p.m. on the warrant and was being held at the Anchorage Jail while awaiting extradition to San Bernadino County, California, authorities said.

5. Celebrities Do the Ice Bucket Challenges

Seems like all the stars these days are going under the bucket — the ice bucket, that is.Celebrities are taking part in the social media craze of the summer — the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge.”The challenge — to donate $100 or get doused in a bucket of ice water — has raised an unprecedented $15.6 million in donations for the ALS Association, compared with $1.8 million during the same period last year.

It’s due in no small part to the stars who have gotten drenched (and opened their wallets) while passing along the challenge to their fellow celebrities.
