1. Valentine's Day 2015: Weekend Freebies and Deals

Americans may spend an average of $96 on Valentine's Day, but you can also enjoy the company of loved ones without busting your budget.

This Valentine's Day spending projection increased 46 percent from last year's $66, according to Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, with many survey respondents saying they will buy a gift for their significant other.

2. The Search Is on for Powerball Winners

The winners in Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot remain a mystery, and the search is on for three newly-minted millionaires sharing the $564 million jackpot.

Winning tickets were sold in North Carolina, Texas and Puerto Rico, matching the numbers 25, 11, 54, 13 and 39, with a Powerball of 19. At this point, none of the winners have emerged.

3. New York Times Media Columnist David Carr Dies at 58

David Carr, a media columnist for The New York Times, died after collapsing in the newsroom on Thursday, the newspaper reported. He was 58 years old.

Carr joined the Times as a business reporter in 2002. Before that, he worked as a contributor for The Atlantic Monthly and New York Magazine.

Carr also published a book, "The Night of the Gun," a memoir on his past addiction.

4. Chapel Hill Shooting: Slain Newlywed Talked About Growing Up Muslim in America

A newlywed killed on Tuesday near University of North Carolina considered growing up in America as a “blessing,” according to a newly released interview from the public radio station WUNC.

Months before she was shot and killed, Yusor Mohammad, 21, gave an interview where she talked about growing up Muslim in America and what she learned from her Muslim elementary school teacher.

5. New Footage Discovered of 1915 Disaster That Killed 844

One hundred years after a boat capsized in the Chicago river, killing 844 people, archival footage of the disaster was accidentally discovered recently by a graduate student.

The clips are Dutch newsreels describing how he SS Eastland, which was carrying 2,500 people, turned onto its side in the Chicago River in July 1915.
