A 4-year-old girl was shot in the head and killed during a road rage incident in New Mexico, officials said.

The circumstances were not clear, but the child was shot while driving with her parents on I-40, Albuquerque police said.

The child was alive when transported to the hospital but has since died.

“I have never seen it before. I’ve seen tragic loss of children in car crashes," said Gordon Eden Jr., Chief of Police Albuquerque Police Department. "This is one of those crimes that is unexplainable. No way to explain your way out of this. We need to rise up as a community and say enough is enough.”
