bowl Sunday, America's love affair with chicken wings. It's estimated 1.2 billion wings eent tonight. And could it be it all started as a mistake? ABC's Darren Rovell tonight. Reporter: Just like when the oreo met milk and butter met popcorn, chicken wings and watching sports have become an American institution. And while the two seem inseparable today, it wasn't always that way. Medium wings? Reporter: It all began, believe it or not, as a mistake that took place 50 years ago at the anchor bar here in Buffalo. As the legend goes, the bar got a delivery of wing parts by mistake, so, to make do, they served them fried and coated in original frank's hot sauce and butter. Wings is quint essential American food. We eat the part of the chicken that they used to throw away! The chicken couldn't even use it. No one wanted them and now they raise chickens just for the wings. Reporter: Matt Reynolds is the man behind a new documentary, "The great chicken wing hunt," chronicling the rise of the chicken wing.
