Our real answers team is back on the road tonight with a consumer alert about a new kind of crime at the gas pump, stealing your money every time you swipe your credit card. Abc's nick watt on the case. Reporter:2:00 a.M. At a gas station in arizona. What are you watching is an alleged fraudster trying to retrieve a so-called skimmer planted inside this pump to steal your credit card digits. They can't find their skimmer because we have already taken it out of there and we have replaced it with a camera, a spy camera. Reporter: Skimming is exploding. Now a multi-billion dollar a sticking up a gas station is so last season. We're on the case. Are you winning the war? Are it's even right now we're doing our best. Reporter: Across the country, increasingly sophisticated gangs, some of them making up to $10 million a year are hiding these electronic devices inside gas pumps. The skimmer gets your credit card while you're paying for gas. There is almost no way of knowing. So what can you do to keep your credit card safe? Pay inside. It's time consuming, but it's a whole lot safer. Check your statements. Most credit card companies will suck up any loss if you report it within 60 days. And if you do pay at the pump, pick one in full view of the attendant which is less likely to have been tampered with. This is scary and this is happening and it's a nationwide issue. Reporter: This, they say, is the new face of credit card crime. And a program note, "the lookout" team will have other consumer alerts tonight at 10:00 eastern.
