Transcript for Time to Lighten the Handbag Load
And finally tonight, a five alarm warning for men and women about the purse you carry or the pack and the price you pay down the road. Abc's amy robach with the truth about a modern epidemic. Reporter: Do you have a heavy bag? Let me see. Oh, my gosh. Reporter: We set out to see how much women are actually lugging around with them. Quick rule of thumb? On one shoulder, should not exceed 5% of your body weight. That means for a 140 pound woman, just 7 pounds, and weighs eight pounds! Whoa, that was 8.5 pounds. Reporter:8.5 pounds. So you were actually carrying 13.3 pounds. It's like marry poppins' bag. Reporter: And just like mary poppins, it's only the a thing of beauty is a joy forever. You do have a lot. Reporter: If you think this isn't a problem for men, look at this. Two gym bags, almost 36 pounds. It's a workout. Reporter:27 million u.S. Adults report having back problems. 37 percent of children aged 11 to 14 report back pain. This mri showed the spine of a 9-year-old, this one when he's carrying a heavy load. Reporter: If you are using it every single day you don't realize the effect it can have. Watch, the body is leaning about 6 degrees when carrying a purse normally but there is an over 9 degree tilt when the bag is held in the crook of the elbow and a whopping 12.7 degree difference when it's held away from the body, putting more stress on the neck, back, knees, even your feet. You don't want to end up in the doctor's office for something like this. I try to downsize -- you just keep needing these things? I do. We thank you for watching
