Transcript for Violent Holiday Weekend in Chicago
Thank you so much. It's been a bloody holiday weekend in Chicago with overnight gun violence bringing the total number of people shot since Friday in the windy city to as many as 50 according to reports. Six of them fatally. It should be noted Chicago has some of the nation's toughest gun laws on the books. The apparent contradiction is a argument that many gun owners are using to advocate a new and controversial movement called open carry. Here's ABC's Byron Pitts. Reporter: It's called open carry Texas. A local movement gone social. Gun owners who demand their right to carry ar-15's in public but handguns as well from department stores to restaurants. When the bad guy comes there's a lot of good guys to protect me. Reporter: Growing in popularity and late night punch-line. We got gear. Get used to it. You guys aren't just firearm enthusiasts. You're ammo-sexuals. Reporter: The movement was dealt a setback this week as target joined a growing list of chains like Starbucks, chipotle. Target and the others were pressured by this woman, founder of moms demand action for gun sense in America. They listened to us when we said we don't want weapons around our children when we're shopping. As for open-carry Texas -- This is probably the safest corner in Texas right now. Reporter: It's founder, the only people will win will be the criminals he says. They know honest people will not be armed in target. As he looks to expand the movement groups are pushing back. The stores in next fall at the ballad box. Byron Pitts, ABC news, San Antonio, Texas.
