— -- Skiers Andreas Fransson of Sweden and J.P. Auclair of Canada were killed in an avalanche on a remote peak on the border of Chile and Argentina, South American officials told ESPN.

The avalanche occurred Monday on Monte San Lorenzo, in Patagonia, which Fransson 31, and Auclair, 37, were climbing with other members of their expedition.

Capt. Alvaro Herrera of the Carabineros police in Cochrane, Chile, near the site of the avalanche in Patagonia, said the bodies of the two men were spotted from a helicopter this afternoon but had not yet been recovered.

Two other members of the expedition, filmmaker Bjarne Salen and photographer Daniel Ronnback, both of Sweden, survived the avalanche, ESPN reported.

On the most recent post on his Facebook page, Fransson said that he, Auclair, Salen and Ronnback were headed for the Andes for a skiing expedition that would be filmed for a video project to be released later this fall.

Both men are known for their extreme skiing exploits, trekking to some of the most remote and wild mountains of the world and filming their adventures.

Auclair captured the world's imagination with a 2011 All.I.Can video that went viral of him skiing through the streets of Trail, British Columbia. The artistically filmed piece follows him as he skis, jumps, flips and sometimes soars down streets, sidewalks and stairways.
