Wayne State Police Officer Dies After Being Shot in Head
Police announced Wednesday morning that a suspect has been taken into custody.
— -- The Wayne State University police officer who was shot Tuesday night has died, the university announced today.
"I am saddened to report that a short time ago, Wayne State University officer Collin Rose died from the gunshot wound he suffered while working in the line of duty yesterday evening," said Wayne State University President M. Roy Wilson.
Wilson asked members of the community to keep Rose and his fiancée, as well as all university police officers, in their prayers.
"Our officers mourn with us, but these dedicated, professional men and women continue to serve us courageously, every day," he said. "We can honor Collin’s memory best with our ongoing gratitude and support for all of our officers."
Michigan police said this morning that they have a suspect in custody after an intensive manhunt. Rose was shot in the head during a traffic stop while patrolling off-campus in Detroit on Tuesday around 7:30 p.m. Investigators are still trying to determine the nature of the stop and what led to the shooting.
Wayne State University Police Department Chief Anthony Holt described Rose, a five-year veteran, as an "excellent officer" who has received a number of commendations.
"This is a very difficult day for me in my 40-plus years being a member of the Wayne State University Police Department," the police chief said.
According to the Wayne State University Police Department, the suspect had previous contact with area law enforcement that included allegedly assaulting police officers.
"He is a known person to us," Holt told reporters this morning.
The shooting took place in an area where there were a number of reported vehicle thefts, according to Detroit Police Department Chief James Craig.
It follows a violent weekend around the country; four officers were shot in 24 hours on Sunday.
"I can't sugarcoat this. This is a tragedy of immense proportions," Wayne State University President Roy Wilson told reporters this morning. "All of our thoughts go to the family, to his fellow officers."
According to Wilson, it has been 36 years since the last time a Wayne State University police officer was shot.
"Many of these officers are younger than 36 and haven't dealt with something like this," he said. "They have a lot to try to take in."
