When Chavela Vargas passed away in early August in Cuernavaca at the age of 93, Mexico and Latin America mourned the loss of a legend. Now fans of the late singer have a chance to hear her speak and sing in the new documentary Hecho En Mexico, out in select Los Angeles theaters Friday, Nov. 30.

In the chapter titled "Alma," Vargas discusses death – how she never feared it - and how "finding the soul in things is the most important discovery a person can make while they're alive."

"I do not fear death. It does not exist. I say to myself, 'If you were capable of being born, then you can die, in peace... It's like a shadow that passes through you," she says during her interview, which is followed by an impromptu performance of the song "Las Simples Cosas." The moment is easily the most poignant one in the 88-minute documentary, which explores the country's present-day situation through music and attempts to answer several existential questions about the human condition.

Vargas is one of approximately 145 artists and thinkers featured in the film, from director Duncan Bridgeman and music supervisor/producer Lynn Fainchtein.
