Feb. 8, 2008— -- Brian McNamee, the trainer who claims he injected star pitcher Roger Clemens with steroids, says he "felt guilty" and knew one day "it would become a scandal," according to his lawyer, Richard Emery.

Emery told ABCNews.com that McNamee, a former New York City policeman, kept the syringes and other paraphernalia as evidence because "he didn't want to get thrown under the bus by Clemens."

"He's used to keeping evidence," Emery said.

McNamee never told investigators working for former Sen. George Mitchell about the evidence because "he was still covering for Clemens," the lawyer said.

"But all bets were off," McNamee's lawyer said, "when Clemens secretly tape recorded a phone call that involved McNamee's ailing son."

The lawyer said the syringes and other material were turned over to federal law enforcement officials last month and released photos of the material late Thursday.

After a meeting yesterday with congressional investigators, Emery called on Clemens to provide a blood sample which Emery said would prove Clemens was injected with steroids.

Clemens has said that injections he received from McNamee only involved vitamin B-12 and lanacaine, substances that were legally available.
