— -- Advancing technology has been a driving force behind how to file tax returns. More than four in five taxpayers now file electronically, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

"Taxpayers make fewer mistakes today than they have in the past and that's generally because of, you know, digital software, online software," TurboTax vice president Bob Meighan says.

But which app is the best?

A competitive duopoly has been brewing between preparers TurboTax and H&R Block. Both have apps that offer complete filing features for Android and iOS devices.

With the apps, taxpayers can track their refunds, get answers to questions and upload their documents with a simple camera click.

Kathy Pickering, executive director of The Tax Institute at H&R Block, explains: "Say, for example, you get your W-2. You can take a picture of it on your phone, upload it to the My Block account, and then know that you've got it safe and sound. You don't need to worry about it."
