Jan. 10, 2014 — -- Anna Paquin admits it's very convenient raising her 16-month-old twins Charlie and Poppy with a husband who has lots of experience with kids.

"All the jokes about the dads and the diapers, and them being useless, he's not!" Paquin told ABC News about her husband and "True Blood" co-star Stephen Moyer.

"I like poo," Moyer joked right back.

Moyer already has two grown children Billy, 13, and Lilac, 11, from before the couple married in 2010, so he added that the step-kids were a great "little starter" for the new mother.

"My kids have been with us a lot, so Anna already had a huge understanding of that, she's very much part of their lives," Moyer said.

The all-star couple spoke to ABC News as part of a new movie "Free Ride," starring Paquin produced by Moyer.

Moyer and Paquin and really enjoying their new twins, they said, especially after they were born a few weeks premature in 2012.

"You just do what you have to do. We weren't the only people who have gone through that situation," Moyer said of the babies' rough start. "There's loads of other people we got very close to in a similar situation."

The "Sound of Music Live" star added that the experience only brought his family closer together.

"It brings you together in a sense that you can't not do it. You have to be there and do the best you can," he said. "I don't think there's any right or wrong way of it going, you just do what you can at the time."

Now, Paquin's twins are doing great and even before they were born, the actress's protective, mothering instincts were apparent on the set of her new film.

Moyer explained that when he visited the production for "Free Ride," he noticed a "beautiful sense of the family unit."

"Ava, who plays [Paquin's] youngest daughter [Shell], she would sort of come over and just be next to Anna," he said. "She becomes incredibly mothering of kids when they are on set."

"Free Ride" is out in theaters today in New York, Los Angeles and Video on Demand, and stars Paquin, Drea de Matteo and Cam Gigandet.

It's "such a powerful story, I think a lot of people wanted to be part of it," Paquin said of playing a mother who turns to dealing drugs while in search of a better life for her kids.
